We invite you to participate in the cast01 symposium on intersections of
artistic, cultural, technological and scientific issues of:
Living in Mixed Realities
What does it mean to live, play and work in a world shaped and perceived
through digital media, networks and architectures of real-virtual space?
The development of complex communication spaces, life environments and
economic models is an interplay of technical, social, and artistic
forces - Mixed Realities of Art, Science and Technology.
The design of a Mixed Reality Architecture, which connects processes in
virtual space to the social environments and cultural practices of real
places, presents challenges to technologists, scientists and artists
alike. In such an architecture the basic design elements are networked
structures for new forms of collaborative work and knowledge discovery,
human-centred interaction and awareness, media spaces and advanced
interfaces.
At cast01 scientists will present technologies and infrastructures that
address these challenges. Artists will present aesthetic concepts of
digital culture and new interactive media formats. cast01 is an
invitation for a discussion between artistic practices and the forefront
of research and development of information technologies.
cast01 is organised by netzspannung.org and by the GMD - German National
Research Center for Information Technology. It is supported by the
German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (bmb+f) and by the
European Commission.

OBJECTIVES:
On September 20-22, 2001 cast01 will present inspiring media art and
innovative research projects from the EU Information Society
Technologies programme (IST). Semantic Web, Mixed Reality, Advanced
Interfaces and Future Media Spaces are only some of the topics that
symbolise the influence of information technology on patterns of life
and work in a networked society. cast01 explores the ways in which Next
Generation Internet can be understood, explored and supported through
creative interdisciplinary practices.
cast01 invites submissions of inspiring research, technological
development and artistic production. Proposed contributions may be in
the form of research papers and artistic presentations as well as
blueprints and posters of developing ideas. Researchers, artists,
theorists, practitioners and entrepreneurs are encouraged to submit
interdisciplinary projects and critical reflections on the merging of
the virtual and the real.

BEST PAPER AWARD
The best paper, artistic presentation, blueprint, poster and student
presentation will be honored with the cast01 award.

Progressive activists:
I want to let you all know about a conference you may be
interested in attending in just over a month's time. This
is the Organizers' Collaborative "annual meeting" on
"Grassroots Use of the Internet."
The event will be held on Saturday, March 10 at Yale Law School.
Last year attendees said they enjoyed the rare opportunity to
discuss issues of using technology to advance social justice in
a "live" setting. See www.organizenow.net for information on
last year's event.
You still have over 4 weeks to make arrangements to attend this
year's conference. The agenda is taking shape and we will have
Louis Posner of VoterMarch.org, and Dirk Slater of the circuit
riders network, among the many speakers and workshop presenters.
We expect presenters with experience not only with voting
rights but also with student organizing, anti-toxics
organizing, reproductive rights, g/l/b/t organizers, anti-
globalization, and several other issue areas.

Media Art SUBMISSIONS NOTICE
Ed Video Media Arts Centre is seeking submissions by independent curators
and established media artists for the upcoming Programming season of
September 2001 - September 2002. Submissions deadline is March 31th 2001.
All submissions will be considered by the Programming Committee and notice
will be given by April 30th.
Work may include audio installation and broadcast, video and film
presentations, new media installation and webcast, video installation and
performance. The work must be Canadian. Installations are presented for
two weeks, screenings and presentations are 1 - 3 hours long.
Please include: A letter of intent, a description of the exhibition's
theme or of the produced work to be screened/presented, any names of
planned artists or works to present, a short biography, a Curriculum Vitae
or list of personal productions if appropriate, and appropriate support
material.
Curators/artists are required to present a critical statement in writing
for the presentation and/or an introductory talk. A budget is not
necessary. The Programmer assists curators and artists with their
presentations. Standard fees are paid.

Re: WEB DISSEMMINATION PROJECT
Dear Colleagues,
The Board of Directors of the Canada Council is funding the Media Arts
Section to organize a project to consolidate and support the efforts of
Canadian media artists, in order to ensure that they have an informed,
active presence in Web dissemination.
The potential for creation and distribution of media artwork over the Web
is enormous but there is a narrow window of opportunity within which to
carve a meaningful presence for artists. In the United States, the
National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture (Namac) estimates that within
three years "audience expectations regarding ... interactive media, and
the infrastructure designed to deliver it, will become resistant to
alternative structures and experiences."
The Media Arts Section is interested in the dissemination of work that was
not originally produced for the Web (videotapes and film, audio works) and
work that only exists in the Web environment (Web movies, webcasts, work
with hypertext links).
The project plans to:
1. Study: consolidate information regarding current practices, challenges
and opportunities, enrich it with international research and test it with
government and private sector partners. 2. Discuss and develop: bring
together members of the community and key partners in a working group to
develop a work plan. 3. Present a proposal for funding web dissemination
projects to the Board of the Canada Council (June 2001) 4. Fund
prototypes: subject to additional funding, organizations will be invited
to apply for funds to build and test dissemination prototypes. 5. Inform:
set up a website to post the research, to invite commentary and feedback
from the community and to follow the development of the prototypes.
Katherine Watson, an Ottawa-based researcher and producer, has been hired
to co-ordinate the project. We have also hired Katarina Soukup of Montréal
to undertake the basic research phase of the project. Katherine has
prepared the attached set of survey questions that we are asking you to
complete and return it me at the Council (...) as soon as possible. If you

Chico Salvak
Chico Salvak has been edited in May 2000 by Marilyn Watelet and Simon Zaleski.
This documentary film is based on interviews of artists and intellectual from foreign communities living in Europe. Those interviews were made separetely from 1998 to 1999 during the event D'ici et de là-bas, organized by the KunstenFESTIVALdesArts and Dito'Dito. Marilyn Watelet and Simon Zaleski made them dialog on the screen, linking the different stories through recurring themes, like exile, work, immigration,.
Today these stories take a new life on the web: www.kunstenfestivaldesarts.be/chicosalvak
It is also the first documentary produced for the web by the KunstenFestival des Arts.
Interviews of: Emerald Beryl (poet, 1964, Maroko / Amsterdam), José Besprosvany (choreographer, 1959, Mexico City / Brussels), Marjorie Boston (actress, 1964, Surinam / Amsterdam), David Bovée (musician, Antwerp/ nomad), Malek Chebel (psychoanalyst, 1953, Algeria / Paris), Mohamed El Baroudi (litterature teacher, 1935, Casablanca / Brussels), Ghalia Ben Ali (singer, 1968, Tunis / Brussels), Leila Houari (writer, 1958, Casablanca / Brussels / Paris), Pie Tshibanda (psychologist & author, 1951, Congo / Belgium), Shanglie Zhou (visual artist, 1958, Shangai / Antwerp).
Chico Salvak, a production of Brussel/Bruxelles 2000 and KunstenFESTIVALdesArts, is based on interviews made during the event D'ici et de là-bas in 1998 en 1999 by Dito'Dito and KunstenFESTIVALdesArts, in collaboration with Transquinquennal.
